Zebra Katz & Njena Foxxx’s delve into their minimalist take on NYC’s hip hop and “ballroom” culture with support from Fade To Mind’s Mike Q at the now party-friendly Black Box Theatre below the Great Hall.
+ Zebra Katz & Njena Reddd Foxxx (Mad Decent/Jeffree, NYC)
Zebra Katz is a rap character who blossomed from a performance-art background. But while Zebra Katz and “Ima Read” are conceptual and performative, Morgan’s explorations of sexuality in his raps are intentionally understated. “Ima Read” is lyrically abstract—the lines could be rapped by someone of any gender or sexual preference, and Morgan doesn’t cross-dress.
“It’s a fine line that I’m playing here. I’m trying to see how cleverly I can walk a tightrope,” he explains, detailing how a more nuanced approach might appeal to broader swaths of listeners. “You have [fans from] the ball culture,” he says. “And then you have hip-hop heads who are gonna say this is hard because it’s very minimal and to-the-point. And we’re talking about bitches and bitches and bitches and bitches.”
+ MikeQ (Fade To Mind, NYC)
MikeQ is one of the leading figures of the East Coast’s long-running (but still largely underground) ballroom/vogue-house scene. Based in New Jersey, the 26 year old producer is not only one of the most in-demand ballroom DJs, but he also heads up his own Qween Beat team and turns out a steady stream of vogue and ballroom tracks, re-edits, and remixes.
